Biophysical Data Published from the km 67 Seca Floresta Site, Brazil

Submitted by ORNL DAAC Staff on

The ORNL DAAC announces the release of biophysical data from the rainfall exclusion experiment conducted at the km 67 Seca Floresta site, Tapajos National Forest, Brazil.

LBA-ECO LC-14 Biophysical Measurements, Rainfall Exclusion, Tapajos National Forest . Data set prepared by D.C. Nepstad and P.R. Moutinho. This data set reports forest biophysical measurements from a rainfall exclusion experiment conducted at the km 67 Seca Floresta site, Tapajos National Forest, Brazil from 1998 to 2006. Data are reported for stem inventory, tree diameter at breast height (DBH) and height, dendrometer measurements of tree diameter growth increments, canopy density, leaf area index (LAI), and coarse and fine litter mass. The measurements were made monthly from September 28, 1998 through November 10, 2006.

LBA was an international research initiative under the leadership of Brazil. The project focused on the climatological, ecological, biogeochemical, and hydrological functions of Amazonia; the impact of land use change on these functions; and the interactions between Amazonia and the Earth system. The LBA-ECO component, which was funded by NASA, focused on the question: "How do tropical forest conversion, regrowth, and selective logging influence carbon storage, nutrient dynamics, trace gas fluxes, and the prospect for sustainable land use in Amazonia? "

The ORNL DAAC is a NASA-funded data center archiving and distributing terrestrial ecology and biogeochemical dynamics data.
