Enhanced MODIS Subsetting Features Available

Submitted by ORNL DAAC Staff on

The ORNL DAAC announces two improvements in its MODIS Subsetting activity. First, the DAAC now offers subsets of MODIS products for 280 sites in GeoTIFF format, in addition to ASCII Format. Second, the DAAC announces the availability of the "MODIS Subsetting and Visualization Tool for North America."

To aid researchers in analyzing MODIS Subsets, the DAAC has augmented its ASCII Subsets product by preparing and distributing GeoTIFF files. Users can select the site and MODIS product and download GeoTIFF images, which are 31 x 11 km, for multiple dates. In addition, the GeoTIFF files can be viewed in a WebGIS system, in Sinusoidal projection. For more information see http://daac.ornl.gov/MODIS/modis.html.

The new subsetting and visualization tool creates subsets in ASCII format for user-selected areas in North America from 1 x 1 km up to 201 x 201 km area and for a user-selected time period during the MODIS record. The tool takes up to 60 minutes to complete the processing, and it will send you an email message containing the URL where you can access the output. The output products are useful for validation of models and remote-sensing products and for characterization of the seasonal dynamics of field sites. For details, please see http://www.modis.ornl.gov/modis/NorthAmerica_Tool/index.cfm.

MODIS Land Products subsetted include the following:

  • Leaf Area Index and Fraction of Photosynthetically Absorbed Radiation (LAI/fPAR),
  • Land Cover,
  • Normalized Difference Vegetation Index and Enhanced Vegetation Index (NDVI/EVI),
  • Gross Primary Productivity (GPP),
  • Net Primary Productivity (NPP),
  • Surface Reflectance,
  • Land Surface Temperature and Emissivity,
  • BRDF Albedo Model,
  • BRDF-calculated albedo, and
  • BRDF-adjusted Nadir Reflectance (MOD43B4, MCD43B4).
The tool provides time-series plots, an ASCII file of the pixel values along with quality information, average and standard deviations for the area selected, and a file that can be imported directly into GIS software. In addition, the tool provides a land cover grid (IGBP classification) of the area, along with an estimate of heterogeneity.
