Five New LBA-ECO ND-11 Data Sets

The ORNL DAAC and the LBA DIS announce the release of five data sets associated with the LBA-ECO component of the Large Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia (LBA).

LBA-ECO ND-11 Organic Carbon Watershed Exports, Mato Grosso, Brazil: 2003-2004. Data set prepared by Evandro C. Selva, Eduardo G. Couto, Mark S. Johnson, and Johannes Lehmann. The data set contains stream water exports of coarse particulate organic matter (CPOM) and coarse particulate organic carbon (CPOC) from four forested headwater streams near Juruena, Mato Grosso, Brazil over the 09/15/2003 to 09/13/2004 time period.

LBA-ECO ND-11 Soil Properties of Forested Headwater Catchments, Mato Grosso, Brazil. Data set prepared by J.P. Novaes Filho, Evandro C. Selva, Eduardo G. Couto, Mark S. Johnson, and Susan J. Riha. This data set presents the results of the analysis of soil chemical parameters, texture, and color for 185 georeferenced soil profile sample points over four forested headwater catchments near Juruena, Mato Grosso, Brazil.

LBA-ECO ND-11 Litter Decomposition, Carbon, and Nitrogen Dynamics in Agroforestry. Data set prepared by Carol M. Schwendener, Johannes Lehmann, P.B.de Camargo, Regina C. Luizao, and Erick C. Fernandes. This data set contains the results of an experiment to determine litter decomposition and dynamics of carbon and nitrogen release from plant litter of differing qualities which occur in combination in agroforestry systems.

LBA-ECO ND-11 Stream Carbon and Nutrients, Mato Grosso, Brazil: 2003-2006. Data set prepared by Mark S. Johnson, Johannes Lehmann, Susan J. Riha, J.P. Novaes Filho, and Eduardo G. Couto. This data set contains streamwater concentrations of pH, specific conductivity, base cations, carbon (dissolved organic carbon (DOC), particulate organic carbon (POC) and bicarbonate alkalinity) and silica for four headwater streams in the seasonally dry Amazon.

LBA-ECO ND-11 Pre-harvest Forest Tree and Liana Biomass, NW Mato Grosso, Brazil: 2003. Data set prepared by T.R. Feldpausch, Stefan Jirka, Andrew J. McDonald, Carlos Passos, Johannes Lehmann, and Susan J. Riha. This data set presents results on measurements of tree species (diameter >10cm), forest characteristics, and calculated biomass.

LBA is an international research initiative under the leadership of Brazil. The project focuses on the climatological, ecological, biogeochemical, and hydrological functions of Amazonia; the impact of land use change on these functions; and the interactions between Amazonia and the Earth system. The LBA-ECO component, which is funded by NASA, focuses on the question: "How do tropical forest conversion, regrowth, and selective logging influence carbon storage, nutrient dynamics, trace gas fluxes, and the prospect for sustainable land use in Amazonia?"
