ISLSCP II Data Sets Released

Submitted by ORNL DAAC Staff on

The ORNL DAAC announces the release of four data sets from the Carbon category of the International Satellite Land-Surface Climatology Project (ISLSCP) Initiative II.

ISLSCP II Global River Fluxes of Carbon and Sediments to the Oceans . This data set was prepared by W. Ludwig,  P. Amiotte-Suchet, and J.L. Probst and  represents estimates for the riverine export of carbon and of sediments and that are discharged to the oceans by rivers for each coastal grid point that receives river inputs.

ISLSCP II Carbon Dioxide Flux at Harvard Forest and Northern BOREAS Sites . This data set was prepared by R.J. Olson, D. Baldocchi, and S. Holladay. Carbon dioxide flux and meteorological data for the Harvard Forest, MA (1992-95) and BOREAS Northern Study Area, Old Black Spruce (Alberta, Canada; 1994-95) FLUXNET sites are provided as examples of the larger FLUXNET data archive available at the ORNL Distributed Active Archive Center. Gap-filled flux data and meteorological data for half-hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, and annual time intervals are presented for each site and year.

ISLSCP II GPPDI, Net Primary Productivity (NPP) Class B Point Data. This data set was prepared by R.J. Olson and J.M.O. Scurlock. The NPP collection contains documented field measurements of NPP for global terrestrial sites compiled from published literature and other extant data sources. The point measurements of NPP Class B represent more numerous “extensive” sites with less documentation and site-specific information available. This data set contains Class B point data of above-ground, below-ground, and total NPP in gCm-2yr-1 for 2,363 point measurements compiled from the literature with associated ancillary information.

ISLSCP II IGBP NPP Output from Terrestrial Biogeochemistry Models . This data set was prepared by W. Cramer and contains modeled annual net primary production (NPP) for the land biosphere from seventeen different global terrestrial biogeochemistry models for use in intercomparison studies.

International Satellite Land-Surface Climatology Project (ISLSCP)

The ISLSCP Initiative II data collection is designed to support modeling studies of the global carbon, water and energy cycle. This data collection contains 50 global time series spanning the ten-year period 1986 to 1995 compiled under the guidance of Forrest Hall and colleagues at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. The data for Initiative II were acquired from a number of U.S. and international agencies, universities, and institutions, then co-registered to equal-angle grids of one degree, one-half and one-quarter degree resolution and reformatted into a common ASCII format.

The collection includes a variety of remotely sensed data sets ranging from visible to microwave wavelengths. The data sets also include improved topography, surface radiation, near-surface meteorology, precipitation, runoff, soils, and vegetation data sets that can be used in a variety of interdisciplinary research activities. Several data sets to support global carbon and biogeochemical studies are also provided.

The ORNL DAAC is a NASA-funded data center archiving and distributing terrestrial ecology and biogeochemical dynamics data.
