The ORNL DAAC and the LBA DIS announce the release of two data sets associated with the LBA-ECO component of the Large Scale Biosphere- Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia (LBA).
- LBA-ECO CD-08 Carbon Isotopes in Belowground Carbon Pools, Amazonas and Para, Brazil . Data set prepared by E.D.C. Telles, P.B. de Camargo, L.A. Martinell, S.E. Trumbore, E.S. da Costa, J. Santos, N. Higuchi, R.C. Oliveira and D. Markewitz. This data set contains carbon isotope signatures of soil organic matter, roots, and soil gas collected from undisturbed and secondary growth forest sites, and degraded and managed pasture sites in the states of Amazonas and Para.
- LBA-ECO TG-07 Soil Trace Gas Fluxes km 67 Seca-Floresta Site, Tapajos National Forest . Data set prepared by R.K. Varner and M. Keller. Data are presented on trace gas flux measurements of carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and nitric oxide from surface soils. The measurements were made manually in an undisturbed forest at the Tapajos National Forest Seca-Floresta Site, which is within the footprint of the km 67 eddy flux tower.
LBA is an international research initiative under the leadership of Brazil. The project focuses on the climatological, ecological, biogeochemical, and hydrological functions of Amazonia; the impact of land use change on these functions; and the interactions between Amazonia and the Earth system. The LBA-ECO component, which is funded by NASA, focuses on the question: "How do tropical forest conversion, regrowth, and selective logging influence carbon storage, nutrient dynamics, trace gas fluxes, and the prospect for sustainable land use in Amazonia?"
