The ORNL DAAC and the LBA DIS announce the release of one data set from the CD-06 Carbon Dynamics team, and six data sets from the Land Use-Land Change teams, components of the LBA-ECO Large Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia (LBA).
- LBA-ECO CD-06 Physical, Political, and Hydrologic Maps, Ji-Parana River Basin, Brazil . Data set prepared by M.V.R. Ballester. This data set contains physical, hydrologic, political, demographic, and societal maps for the Ji-Parana River Basin, in the state of Rondonia, Brazil. These data were used as base information in subsequent investigations of land use/land cover, biogeochemistry, soils, and water balance processes.
- LBA-ECO LC-08 Passive Ground-based Fire Data, Para and Mato Grosso Brazil: 2001-2002. Data set prepared by M.F. Cardoso, G.C. Hurtt, B. Moore III, C.A. Nobre and H. Bain. This data set reports observations of fires in the vicinity of Maraba, Para, Brazil, from November 3-5th, 2001, and in Mato Grosso, Brazil, between Cuiaba and Alta Floresta, for July 12-15th, 2002.
Three LC-02 data sets published were from research conducted in Acre, Brazil:
- LBA-ECO LC-02 Forest Flammability Data, Catuaba Experimental Farm, Acre, Brazil: 1998. Data set prepared by E.R.H. Mendoza, I.F. Brown, and D.C. Nepstad. This data set provides the results of controlled burns conducted to assess the flammability of mature forests on the Catuaba Experimental Farm of the Federal University of Acre.
- LBA-ECO LC-02 Daily Meteorological Data, Rio Branco, Acre, Brazil: 1970-2001. Data set prepared by A.F. Duarte, W.A.F. de Melo, and I.F. Brown. This data set provides meteorological measurements collected from 3 different meteorological stations for the periods of June of 1970 to 1974, December of 1974 to 1980, and May of 1980 thru May 31, 2001.
- LBA-ECO LC-02 GOES-08 Hot Pixel Data from Acre, Brazil: 1998, 2000, and 2001. Data set prepared by D. Selhorst and I.F. Brown. This data set provides hot pixel data, as an indicator of fires that were detected by the GOES-8 satellite for the state of Acre, Brazil. Image data were collected for extended periods over the course of 3 years (1998, 2000 and 2001).
Two LC-03 data sets covered four study areas across the Brazilian Amazon: Manaus, Amazonas; Tapajos National Forest, Para Western (Santarem); Rio Branco, Acre; and Rondonia, Rondonia. These data sets were prepared by M.C. Dobson and L.E. Pierce:
- LBA-ECO LC-03 Hypsography, Rivers, Roads, and DEM, Four Areas across Brazilian Amazon. This data set provides four related spatial data products: vector data showing (1) roads, (2) rivers, and (3) hypsography and (4) digital elevation model (DEM) images that were encoded from the hypsography vectors. These data products cover the period 1974/01/01 to 1978/01/01.
- LBA-ECO LC-03 SAR Images, Land Cover, and Biomass, Four Areas across Brazilian Amazon. This data set provides three related land cover products: (1) orthorectified JERS-1 and RadarSat images, (2) land cover classifications derived from the SAR data, and (3) biomass estimates in tons per hectare based on the land cover classification. These data products cover the period 1974/01/01 to 1998/06/18.
LBA is an international research initiative under the leadership of Brazil. The project focuses on the climatological, ecological, biogeochemical, and hydrological functions of Amazonia; the impact of land use change on these functions; and the interactions between Amazonia and the Earth system. The LBA-ECO component, which is funded by NASA, focuses on the question: "How do tropical forest conversion, regrowth, and selective logging influence carbon storage, nutrient dynamics, trace gas fluxes, and the prospect for sustainable land use in Amazonia?"
