Seven New CD and TG LBA Data Sets

Submitted by ORNL DAAC Staff on

The ORNL DAAC and the LBA DIS announce the release of four data sets from the Carbon Dynamics teams and three data sets from the Trace Gas and Aerosol Fluxes science teams, components of the LBA-ECO Large Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia (LBA).

  • LBA-ECO CD-02 C and N Isotopes in Leaves and Atmospheric CO2, Amazonas, Brazil . Data set prepared by A.C. de Araujo, J.P.H.B. Ometto, A.J. Dolman, B. Kruijt, M.J. Waterloo and J.R. Ehleringer. This data set reports delta 13C/12C results for leaf tissues and atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2), delta 15N/14N ratios for leaf tissue, and leaf carbon and nitrogen concentrations along a topographical gradient in old-growth forests near Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. Also included are coincident meteorological, atmospheric CO2, and CO2 flux measurements.
  • LBA-ECO CD-02 Leaf Water Potential, Forest and Pasture Sites, Para, Brazil: 2000-2001. Data set prepared by D. Almeida, T.F. Domingues, J. Ehleringer, L.A. Martinelli, C. Cook, L. Flanagan, J. Berry, and J.P. Ometto. This data set reports measurements for leaf water potential of leaves of trees and lianas from the primary forest and for measurements of sapling trees and grass from a pasture site from Tapajos National Forest.
  • LBA-ECO CD-04 LAI Estimated from Photos, km 83 Tower Site, Tapajos National Forest . Data set prepared by R.N. Juarez, H.R. da Rocha, A.M. Figueira, M.L. Goulden, and S.D. Miller. This data set contains summary data for monthly leaf area index (LAI) and plant area index (PAI) in the Tapajos National Forest, Para, Brazil. LAI was estimated for hemispherical photographs of leaves collected between 2000 and 2003.
  • LBA-ECO CD-09 Soil and Vegetation Characteristics, Tapajos National Forest, Brazil . Data set prepared by M. Williams, Y.E. Shimabokuro and E.B. Rastetter. This data set reports the results of soil and vegetation surveys within the Tapajos National Forest in November 1999. At 13 individual sites, all located in primary forest, core soil samples were analyzed for soil characteristics and nutrients. At these 13 sites, vegetation, biomass, and LAI were estimated. Canopy samples of foliage, wood, bark, fine roots, and litter were analyzed for %N, %C, delta 13C, and delta 15N.
  • LBA-ECO TG-07 Seasonal Trace Gas Profiles In Brazlian Amazon Forests: 2004-2005. Data set prepared by J.B. do Carmo, M. Keller, J.D. Dias, P.B. de Camargo and P. Crill. Data are provided for concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) from air samples collected at several heights on towers at three locations in upland old growth forests in the Brazilian Amazon during the wet and dry seasons of 2004 and 2005.
  • LBA-ECO TG-08 Trace Gas Fluxes from Wetted Forest and Pasture Soils, Rondonia, Brazil . Data set prepared by D.C. Garcia-Montiel, P.A. Steudler, M. Piccolo, C. Neill, J. Melillo, and C.C. Cerri. Measurements are included for soil gas fluxes of nitric oxide (NO), nitrous oxide (N2O), and carbon dioxide (CO2), soil moisture, soil temperature, and soil pools of ammonium and nitrate in response to a simulated rain event during the dry season at Fazenda Nova Vida, Rondonia.
  • LBA-ECO TG-08 Soil Gas Flux after Forest and Pasture Fertilization, Rondonia, Brazil . Data set prepared by P.A. Steudler, D.C. Garcia-Montiel, M. Piccolo, C. Neill, J. Melillo, B.J. Feigl, and C.C. Cerri. Measurements are provided on nitric oxide (NO), nitrous oxide (N2O), carbon dioxide (CO2) flux measurements, N and P pools, net N mineralization and nitrification rates, and measurements of soil moisture, in response to nitrogen and phosphorus soil fertilization treatments. The research was conducted in a mature moist tropical forest and a pasture at Nova Vida in Rondonia.

LBA is an international research initiative under the leadership of Brazil. The project focuses on the climatological, ecological, biogeochemical, and hydrological functions of Amazonia; the impact of land use change on these functions; and the interactions between Amazonia and the Earth system. The LBA-ECO component, which is funded by NASA, focuses on the question: "How do tropical forest conversion, regrowth, and selective logging influence carbon storage, nutrient dynamics, trace gas fluxes, and the prospect for sustainable "

See the LBA Project page for further information about the study and to access associated data and documentation maintained by the ORNL DAAC.

The ORNL DAAC is a NASA-funded data center archiving and distributing terrestrial ecology and biogeochemical dynamics data. The LBA Data and Information System (LBA-DIS) has been developed by INPE with NASA's participation.
