Three New LBA-ECO LC-09 Data Sets

The ORNL DAAC and the LBA DIS announce the release of three data sets associated with the LBA-ECO component of the Large Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia (LBA).

LBA-ECO LC-09 Daily Precipitation for Altamira and Santarem, Para, Brazil: 1961-1998 Data set prepared by Eduardo S. Brondizio and Emilio F. Moran. This data set reports daily total precipitation data retrieved from the Brazilian National Institute of Meteorology (INMET) network for three stations near two Amazonian research sites: Altamira, and Santarem, from 1961-1998.

LBA-ECO LC-09 Soil Composition and Structure in the Brazilian Amazon: 1992-1995 Data set prepared by Eduardo S. Brondizio and Emilio F. Moran. This data set reports basic soil structure and composition information for five Amazonian research sites: Altamira, Bragantina, Tome-Acu, and Ponta de Pedras, in the state of Para, Brazil, and one site in Yapu, Columbia.

LBA-ECO LC-09 Vegetation Composition and Structure in the Brazilian Amazon: 1992-1995 Data set prepared by Eduardo S. Brondizio, Mateus Batistella, and Emilio F. Moran. This data set reports vegetation composition and structure for five Amazonian sites: Altamira, Bragantina, Tome-Acu, and Ponta de Pedras, in the state of Para, Brazil, and one site in Yapu, Columbia.

LBA is an international research initiative under the leadership of Brazil. The project focuses on the climatological, ecological, biogeochemical, and hydrological functions of Amazonia; the impact of land use on these functions; and the interactions between Amazonia and the Earth system. The LBA-ECO component, which is funded by NASA, focuses on the question: "How do tropical forest conversion, regrowth, and selective logging influence carbon storage, nutrient dynamics, trace gas fluxes, and the prospect for sustainable land use in Amazonia?
