Southern African Data Release

The ORNL DAAC announces that 10 additional data sets prepared for the Southern African Regional Science Initiative ("SAFARI 2000") and their documentation are available on-line. The data were earlier released on CD-ROM.

The data sets, listed as follows, were extracted from global data sets for the bounding coordinates of southern Africa (5 W to 60 E and 5 N to 35 S).

Vegetation / Land Cover Data

RGD Data in Mercury

Over 130 data sets related to regional and global biogeochemical dynamics can now be located and acquired through the Mercury metadata search system at the ORNL DAAC. Thirty-five data sets were added in the past 3 months.

A variety of data held by data centers and researchers around the world are available through Mercury, including data related to climate, hydrology, vegetation/land cover, land use, soil characteristics, and gas flux/emissions. Mercury also provides links to Web sites containing models for predicting biogeochemical processes.

New Southern African Data On-Line

Six additional data sets prepared for the Southern African Regional Science Initiative ("SAFARI 2000") are now available on-line from the ORNL DAAC, along with their documentation. The data were earlier released on CD-ROM.

The data were extracted from global data sets for the bounding coordinates of southern Africa (5 W to 60 E and 5 N to 35 S). The extracted data sets contain climate data, Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) measurements of land cover, wetlands data, and a digital elevation model.

Climate Data

Arctic Flux Data Available

The ORNL DAAC announces that data about atmospheric fluxes in the Arctic tundra are now available on-line.

Southern African Data On-Line

Three data sets from the Southern African Regional Science Initiative (known as "SAFARI 2000") are now accessible from the ORNL DAAC Web site.

Revised VEMAP 1 Soil Data Set

The ORNL DAAC announces that soil data from Phase 1 of the Vegetation/Ecosystem Modeling and Analysis Project (VEMAP) have been revised. Data providers corrected some water holding capacity (WHC) files in the data set entitled "VEMAP 1: U.S. Soil."

To learn more about the revisions, see our Data Set Change Information.

Cite Data, Send Reprints

Have data products from the ORNL DAAC been helpful to you in your research and publications?

If so, we ask that you include bibliographic citations in your publications to indicate which data products you have used. Please also send us one reprint of each publication. If reprints are not available, then send us a bibliographic citation.

Global Climate Data in GIS Formats

ORNL DAAC has re-released a key climatology data set in two additional formats especially suitable for geographic information system (GIS) users.

Version 2.1 of "Global 30-Year Mean Monthly Climatology, 1930-1960 (Cramer and Leemans)" now offers the data in ASCII GRID format and binary format. These formats can be read directly into software packages such as ESRI's ARC/INFO and ERDAS' IMAGINE.

Global Soil Respiration Data

The ORNL DAAC announces the addition of global annual soil respiration data to its holdings on the physical and chemical properties of soils.

Compiled by J. W. Raich and W. H. Schlesinger, the newly released data set contains soil respiration rates from sites in terrestrial and wetland ecosystems as reported in scientific literature prior to 1992.

VEMAP Phase 2 Daily Data Available

The ORNL DAAC has released two data sets with daily climate values from Phase 2 of the Vegetation/Ecosystem Modeling and Analysis Project (VEMAP).

"VEMAP 2: U.S. Daily Climate, 1895-1993" contains daily measurements of minimum and maximum temperature, precipitation, vapor pressure, solar radiation, irradiance, and relative humidity for the contiguous United States from January 1895 through December 1993.
