VEMAP Phase 2 Daily Data Available

The ORNL DAAC has released two data sets with daily climate values from Phase 2 of the Vegetation/Ecosystem Modeling and Analysis Project (VEMAP).

"VEMAP 2: U.S. Daily Climate, 1895-1993" contains daily measurements of minimum and maximum temperature, precipitation, vapor pressure, solar radiation, irradiance, and relative humidity for the contiguous United States from January 1895 through December 1993.

NPP Data Release

The ORNL DAAC is now distributing the final data products from the 6-year Net Primary Productivity (NPP) project, which documented field measurements of biomass dynamics and estimated NPP for terrestrial sites worldwide. The project produced 61 site-specific data sets and 8 multi-site or multi-biome data sets. In addition, associated global products synthesizing data from various sources are available.

Guidance for Data Providers

Are you planning to submit data to the ORNL DAAC to be archived and distributed to others? If so, we suggest that you look at our guidance on data management practices.

At the request of data providers, we developed the guidance so all data products will meet basic standards before they are archived or distributed.

Guidance is provided for essential information such as file names, file formats, data documentation, and metadata--that is, information about the data.

Southern African Data on CD-ROM

The ORNL DAAC has released a CD-ROM volume containing recent and historical environmental data from SAFARI 2000, the Southern African Regional Science Initiative.

SAFARI 2000 CD-ROM Series: Vol. 1 includes remote-sensing images from the Advanced Very High-Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) for key measurement sites and for the southern African region.

Leaf Area Index Data Available

The ORNL DAAC announces the availability of a global data set containing approximately 1000 estimates of leaf area index (LAI) for a variety of biomes and land cover types.

The data set contains previously published estimates of LAI for more than 450 unique field sites worldwide, with the earliest values from 1932. Latitude, longitude, elevation, stand age, aboveground NPP, and other associated variables are available for many, but not all, sites. A bibliography of more than 300 original data sources is also available.

BOREAS Follow-On Release

The ORNL DAAC announces the release of 26 data sets from the BOREAS (Boreal Ecosystem-Atmosphere Study) Follow-On project.

The data sets include flux and meteorological data from selected BOREAS field sites as well as derived surface products from modeling activities and remote-sensing data.

European and American Flux Data

The ORNL DAAC now offers data from EUROFLUX and AmeriFlux sites.

EUROFLUX was a 3-year project that collected measurements of fluxes of carbon dioxide, water vapor, and energy exchange at a variety of sites in Europe. Many of the EUROFLUX sites are now included as sites in the CARBOEUROFLUX project. The sites collectively represent the entire range in European climate, species distribution, and site conditions.

The AmeriFlux network collects long-term measurements of carbon dioxide, water vapor, and energy exchange for North America and South America.

PROVE Data and Images Released

Data and images are now available from the Prototype Validation Exercise (PROVE), a field campaign conducted in May 1997 at the Jornada Experimental Range near Las Cruces, New Mexico. The Jornada Experimental Range is an expansive plateau on the Chihuahuan Desert and hosts a complex mosaic of grasses and shrubs that were characterized during PROVE.
