Second CD-ROM for Southern Africa

The ORNL DAAC announces that the second CD-ROM volume prepared for the Southern African Regional Science Initiative (“SAFARI 2000”) is now available to the public.

“SAFARI 2000 CD-ROM Series: Vol. 2” is a 5-disk set containing meteorological, fire, aerosol, atmospheric chemistry, and precipitation data, as well as a large collection of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) images taken aboard the Terra satellite.

Map Server Locates MODIS Subsets

The ORNL DAAC now offers a Web map server to help users choose sites that have subsets of MODIS satellite imagery.

Users can choose from over 270 sites worldwide and retrieve files for selected MODIS Land Products in ASCII format. The subsets measure 7- by 7-km and are centered on a flux tower or field site.

To access the map server, visit the MODIS ASCII Subsets page and click on the "MODIS Map Server" link in the bar at the top.

Map Server for FLUXNET Data

The ORNL DAAC has developed a Web map server to help users locate flux tower sites from around the world.

Users can choose from more than 210 sites in the FLUXNET global network and retrieve information about site characteristics and any available flux data.

To access the Web map server for the FLUXNET data, open the FLUXNET project page and click on "Map Server" in the bar at the top.

The map server requires a java plugin that can be installed from a link at the bottom of the map server Web page.

ORNL DAAC Outage June 14

Beginning at 8:00 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Saturday, June 14, 2003, the ORNL DAAC's Web and FTP sites will be unavailable because of an equipment move. The outage is expected to last from 4 to 12 hours.

Grassland Validation Data Available

The ORNL DAAC has released six data sets from the Prototype Validation Exercise (PROVE), which was conducted on a grassland-shrub site in New Mexico in May 1997.

Mercury EOS Announced

April 21, 2003:

Mercury EOS, the ORNL DAAC's new search and order system that works with NASA's EOS ClearingHouse (ECHO), is now operational. The system allows free text, fielded, spatial, and temporal searching, and it allows orders to be a combination of physical media and electronic delivery. Mercury EOS is available on the ORNL DAAC home page's "Finding Data" pulldown menu.

Global Flux Data Released

The ORNL DAAC has released a global data set pertaining to fluxes of carbon dioxide and water from vegetation.

"Net Carbon Dioxide and Water Fluxes of Global Terrestrial Ecosystems, 1969-1998" examines the variability of net surface carbon assimilation, net ecosystem surface respiration, and net surface evapotranspiration among and within vegetation types. The data were compiled from scientific papers published between 1969 and 1998.

Global Root Data On-Line

The ORNL DAAC announces the release of four global data sets on root characteristics. The data were compiled from a variety of scientific literature dating as far back as the 1950s.

U.S. Vegetation Data Available

The ORNL DAAC announces the release of two U.S. data products in its Vegetation Collections.

New NPP: Eastern U.S. Forests

The ORNL DAAC has released a net primary productivity (NPP) data set pertaining to the mortality of woody biomass in eastern U.S. forests.

"NPP Multi-Biome: Production and Mortality for Eastern U.S. Forests, 1962-1996" contains estimates of the annual mean aboveground wood increments for hardwood and softwood forests in 1956 counties of the 28 eastern states. The estimates are based on forest inventory data from the 1960s to the 1990s.
