Winter 2006 Newsletter

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC) is pleased to present the Winter 2006 issue of the ORNL DAAC Newsletter. We plan to include in this semiannual newsletter announcements of new data sets and services being offered to the public as well as news of other happenings and events. We welcome feedback. Send comments and suggestions to ornldaac@ornl.gov.

S2K Land Surface Temperature

The ORNL DAAC announces the release of a new SAFARI 2000 data set. The data set "SAFARI 2000 AVHRR-derived Land Surface Temperature Maps, Africa, 1995-2000" contains daily, day and night, LST data set for continental Africa, including Madagascar, derived from Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Global Area Coverage (GAC; 4-km resolution) data for the 6-year lifetime of the NOAA-14 satellite (from 1995 to 2000) using a modified version of the Global Inventory Mapping and Monitoring System (GIMMS) (Tucker et al., 1994).

Four New S2K Data Sets

The ORNL DAAC announces the release of four data sets for the SAFARI 2000 project. Two data sets, "SAFARI 2000 TOMS Tropospheric Ozone Data, Southern Africa Subset, Dry Season 2000" and "SAFARI 2000 TOMS Aerosol Index Data, Southern Africa, Dry Season 2000," contain ozone and aerosol data from the Earth Probe (EP) Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) for the time period August-September 2000.

CENTURY Model Product Available

The ORNL DAAC announces the availability of a new model product.

The model product "CENTURY: Modeling Ecosystem Responses to Climate Change, Version 4 (VEMAP 1995)" is a general model of plant-soil nutrient cycling that is being used to simulate carbon and nutrient dynamics for different types of ecosystems including grasslands, agricultural lands, forests and savannas. CENTURY is composed of a soil organic matter/decomposition submodel, a water budget model, a grassland/crop submodel, a forest production submodel, and management and events scheduling functions.

Expanded Web Map Server and WebGIS Tools

The ORNL DAAC has developed a WebGIS system that consolidates earlier project-centric viewers into one system to help users locate data, including site characteristics, from flux tower sites, MODIS ASCII Subset Sites, and NPP field sites from around the world.

Model Products and NPP and Vegetation Data Released

The ORNL DAAC announces the availability of four new products.

SAFARI 2000 MODIS Data Sets Available

The ORNL DAAC announces the release of four products from NASA's Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) for the SAFARI 2000 project. The data set "SAFARI 2000 MODIS MOD04_L2 Aerosol Data, GRANT Format, for Southern Africa" contains ambient aerosol optical thickness data for the period August 21, 2000, through September 26, 2000. The product "SAFARI 2000 MODIS MOD05_L2 Water Vapor Data, Binary Format, for Southern Africa" contains vertical column water vapor data for the period August 21, 2000, through September 20, 2000.

FLUXNET and Hydroclimatology Data Available

The ORNL DAAC announces the availability of two new data sets. The data set "FLUXNET Marconi Conference Gap-Filled Flux and Meteorology Data, 1992-2000" contains measurements of fluxes of carbon dioxide, water vapor, and energy exchange for 38 forest, grassland, and crop sites as part of the EUROFLUX and AmeriFlux projects. A total of 97 site-years of data was compiled, primarily between 1996 and 1998 but also for 1992-1995 and 1999-2000.
