Improved Global Subsets Tool for MODIS/VIIRS Land Products

Submitted by ORNL DAAC Staff on

The ORNL DAAC released Version 2.0 of its Global Subsetting and Visualization Tool for Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer/Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (MODIS/VIIRS) land products. This release includes a responsive design that enables mobile-friendly access, expands order capabilities to include multiple product and multiple site selections in a single order, simplifies reordering through an improved order history feature, and provides a community requested "Use My Location" function that determines the user's location allowing field researchers to place orders at their research sites.

This Global Subsetting and Visualization Tool provides on-demand, customized subsets of more than 30 select Land Products through an interactive web page. These data products are generated from algorithms with inputs from instruments on three satellite platforms: MODIS, flown on NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites, and VIIRS, flown on the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP). MODIS products from Terra are available from February 2000 to present, Aqua products are available from June 2002 to present, and VIIRS products are available from January 2012 onward. Products are available for daily, 4-day, 8-day, 16-day, and annual composite periods at 250-m, 500-m, or 1-km resolution, depending on the product. MODIS and VIIRS tiled data are provided to the ORNL DAAC by the Land Processes DAAC.

The goal of the MODIS Land Product Subsets project is to provide readily accessible summaries of selected MODIS/VIIRS Land Products for the community to use for validation of models and remote-sensing products and to characterize field sites. The ORNL DAAC delivers the subsets along with interactive visualizations and quality information in a user-selected format (comma-separated or GeoTiff) and projection (native sinusoidal or WGS84 geographic). The subset data are particularly useful in conjunction with other field data. See all ORNL DAAC data from the MODIS Land Products Subsets.
